The surgery usually takes about 30-60 minutes. It begins with an IV to relax the patient, and laying them down onto an x-ray table. The skin will be cleansed over areas that may be affected. Next, the doctor will numb a small area of skin, which may sting. The x-ray will guide a radiofrequency needle alongside the medial branch nerves. A small amount of electrical current will then be carefully passed through each needle to assure the proper placement, which may cause a twitch in your back or neck. This process will be repeated a few times.
It is not recommended for patients to drive the day of a facet joint injection. Within 24 hours, you may start to return to your everyday activities; however, your neck or back may be sore during the next several weeks. The nerves will regenerate but the pain may or may not return. Since every patient reacts differently to the procedure, there is no definitive way for us to tell if pain will or will not occur.
